California Merlot
California Merlot is a popular red wine known for its soft, approachable, and luscious character. It is typically dry, medium to full-bodied, and has moderate acidity. Depending on where it is grown within California, its flavors can include notes of herbs, black fruits, and baking spices. Warmer California climates often result in a fruitier, sweeter taste with prominent dark fruit characteristics like plum, dark cherry, and blackberry. Aging in oak barrels can add notes of vanilla, chocolate, and clove. Merlot is one of the principal wine grape varieties of the Bordeaux region in France and was brought to California in the mid-19th century. It is often used as a blending grape to soften wines, usually with Cabernet Sauvignon, but is also popular as a varietal wine. California Merlot held a 7% share of U.S. food store wine shipments in 2016, making it the third leading red varietal after Cabernet Sauvignon and Red Blends
